MAY 27TH 2010 - Hope House Fundraiser Toronto | schools for children in the red light districts
TORONTO HOPE HOUSE FUNDRAISER
John McDowell, composer of music to the film Born into Brothels, accompanied by Regent Park Children’s Choir, performed songs from the film at a fundraiser entitled ”Buy a Brick, Build a Home.” The event was held on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at the Palais Royale in Toronto, ON, Canada.
This VIP Indian Garden Party and Basement Bhangra After Party was hosted by Born into Brothels Academy Award winning Director Ross Kauffman and Executive Producer Geralyn White Dreyfous, who, together are helping raise funds to build Hope House for girls from the red light district of Calcutta.

How can you help to break the cycle of poverty and make a difference in the lives of more children like those portrayed in Born into Brothels?
Kids With Cameras plans to break ground in late 2010 to construct Hope House (Asha Niwas) on a stunning 5-acre property in the suburbs of Calcutta. This will be a nurturing safe haven where up to 100 girls from Calcutta's red light district can come to live and develop the strength and skills to change their own circumstances while remaining connected to their families.
The children who live in Hope House will receive a free, first-rate education through high school, courtesy of our partner, the Buntain Foundation, which owns and operates 100 schools in India. The Buntain Foundation will also manage and staff the home.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters around the world, we have raised $1.15 million in commitments toward our $1.2 million comprehensive campaign goal.
The plan for the Hope House excels in its sustainability as it is the centerpiece of a landmark endeavor in Calcutta: a three-phase model of intervention to deliver psychological and physical health care, education, mentorship and employment opportunity to these young women and their mothers.
We have strategically partnered with the Buntain Foundation to develop this plan:
- Phase One - Mobile Health Clinic Outreach catering to the specific medical needs of the women and children living in the red light district. Creating easily accessible and affordable medical care for these women prevents deathly disease from developing and spreading. Offering children and their mothers a safe and secure environment with expert care focused on preventative and clinical services allows each to seek it without the fear of being labeled, rejected, or mistreated.
- Phase Two - Once relationships with the mothers are built, Hope House provides a place for their daughters to live, learn and grow. They will be mentored by nursing students at the Buntain College of Nursing to be built on the adjacent property. Art will play a central role – as it did in the film – assisted by nature: there will be artists-in-residence and gardens to tend, with - a far cry from the squalid rooms and chaotic conditions of the congested red light district. The idea is to develop a model "home" that can be replicated elsewhere.
- Phase Three - Long term care is provided. Also, a laundry facility to service the Buntains other facilities in Calcutta will be built on adjacent property to the Hope House for mothers of the Hope House girls to work as an alternative to the red-light district. Here, they can learn new skills and live within close proximity to their daughters.

Please help us by making a nomination. Please also pass along this invitation to anyone who might be able to nominate suitable organizations or individuals. We also welcome self-nominations.

One award to a community-based organization
One award will go to an organization working directly within communities to make the most significant and transformative contribution to ending slavery. Someone is in slavery when they are forced to work under threat of violence, paid nothing beyond sustenance and unable to walk away. Slavery takes many forms including bonded labor, child soldiers, domestic servitude, forced child labor and sex slavery.
This award, named the Harriet Tubman Award, will give the winning organization:
• A grant of $25,000 each year for two years
• A technical assistance package worth $15,000 each year for two years
• A tour in the USA to share experiences with relevant organizations
• A short documentary video produced by Free the Slaves about the anti-slavery activities
of the organization
Eligibility requirements for the Harriet Tubman Award
Community-based organizations in any part of the world are eligible for this award (more information included on nomination form). Organizations must:
• Have been operating for at least three years
• Be legally able to receive funds from overseas sources
• Be willing to share their work experiences with others, including through sending
two representatives to the awards ceremony in the USA (We will arrange interpretation)
One award to an individual survivor of slavery living outside the USA
This award will be given to an individual who has survived a form of slavery and is now using his or her life in freedom to assist others. This award honors the tremendous resilience of the human spirit and emphasizes that many survivors of modern-day slavery go on to help others to freedom.
This award, named the Frederick Douglass Award, will give the winning individual:
• $10,000 for training and capacity building to continue and expand his or her work
• A total of $10,000 over two years, to be used as he or she sees fit
Eligibility requirements for the Frederick Douglass Award
Individuals in any part of the world (except living in the USA) are eligible for this award (more information included on nomination form). The individual must:
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be willing to travel to the USA with a companion (We will cover travel costs and

STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING
As our nation is getting excited about the Olympic Games approaching in February 2010, many people are grieving the horrors that will take place during the 2010 Games. Large sporting events attract human traffickers, as they know there will be great opportunities to make huge money from (mainly) men who buy sex.
I have been contracted to organize a panel discussion that will address how buying sex supports human trafficking, and the reality of what takes places to prostituted women and children. I want to personally invite you to come to one of the panels, this is a HUGE injustice in our world, and it is time that we become aware of, as Artist and Director Justin Dillon states, the "world's 27 million darkest secrets."
Human Trafficking is the fastest growing crime on the planet today, and our nation, Canada needs to be a leader and an example to the world to join the movement to STOP Human Trafficking and the exploitation of people around the world.
This is not a Christian issue, a Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, Hindu, Agnostic, or Atheist issue, it is not a black or white issue, nor is it a conservative or liberal, Canadian or Indian issue, this is not just a male or female issue...this is GLOBAL HUMAN ISSUE, and if you happen to fall in that category, it should demand your attention; but further it should compel our hearts, minds and souls to learn more and take action against this injustice. I urge you to come to the panel January 30th and/or February 1st at 8pm.
As a nation, it is my heart to see Canadians take a firm stance to tell the world that Canada will not tolerate the sexual exploitation against women and children.
*There are 27 million people in slavery today,
more than double the African Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
*70% of people trafficked are for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
*80% are women and children.
I believe that the abolition of slavery can end within 25 years, but it will require millions of voices to unite together on this issue.
I invite you to come to hear why we need your voice!

Women and children in Metro Vancouver and Whistler are routinely coerced into the flesh trade to meet this demand, and a large sporting event such as the 2010 Olympics will only further exploitation through a rise in the demand for paid sex. Demand is an issue we have already flagged in Canada and have been working against for years.

This campaign will spread the message broadly through community-based public forums, postering campaigns, t-shirts, buttons and your creative ideas.

This collection, "a taste of india," is from a trip I was apart of with Westside Church in Vancouver in 2007. We had a team of twelve people who went to serve for two weeks on a prayer and awareness project throughout India. This was a very exciting time within the ministry of Westside Church as the church was still young and was in the beginning stages of establishing our global service projects, in this case India. While in India we spent much of our time in the city of New Delhi and in the northern Punjab region. Since this trip was the beginning of Westside's service efforts in India, our hope was to accomplish the following three goals:
1. Open our eyes geographically and spiritually to the landscape of the nation.
2. Seek God's heart and vision for us as a church as we look ahead to future service and partnerships in India.
3. Practically get our hands dirty and serve within the culture through various projects such as: Dar-ul-Fazl Children's Home (Orphanage) in Manali, Shanti Niketan Children's Home in Sabathu (Orphanage) and the Sughandh Slum Project in Delhi.
Returning from India, Westside Church in Vancouver and Willow Park Church in Kewlowa partnered together to take over the Shanti Niketan Children's Home in Sabathu, forming Child of Mine. As of October 2008, Child of Mine assumes the responsibility and care for the economic needs of the homes, and our desire is to holistically partner with their God-given vision to equip and prepare these children to serve God in North India. Child of Mine is committed to building effective partnerships with such organizations in order to help these children fulfill their calling.

THANK YOU for your support!! The walk to STOP Child Trafficking was a great day; the turn out was a little smaller than I would have liked, but for the first walk in Toronto, it was better than nothing!
Next years walk will be GRANDE!
I knew that there was a greater purpose and reason for me not running my marathon--and on this walk I found the reason. Sophia, the girl who was organizing the walk asked me to orchestrate the walk to STOP Child Trafficking with her next year...AND...I have been wanting to get in touch with an organization called "Me to We" for years, and Sophia works with them!! This connection is priceless!!
The walk was great! We raised awareness in Toronto and even got to speak to some people about the issue of Human Trafficking after our walk with people who saw us walking around Toronto.
Awareness is the first step to change-exposing the issue of injustice.

I have been emailing Call+Response for over a year, telling them that they need to come to Canada. And they are finally here!!!

The Day 1 devotional begins with the words of Scripture, “Blow the trumpet in Zion!” Well, the trumpet has sounded and the fall 40 Days for Life campaign has officially begun.
These next 40 days will be an awesome journey as, together, we embark on the largest single coordinated pro-life mission ever conducted.
Tens of thousands of people across 212 cities are uniting in this prayerful effort — as well as countless others in places from coast to coast who will be praying from their homes and churches — imploring God to end the scourge of abortion.
For this effort to have grown to such an amazing size — and to have already saved 1,561 children from abortion over the last two years — is, to me, proof that this is God’s work.
HE is the answer to this crisis of abortion, so let’s pray harder than we’ve ever prayed before!
And speaking of blowing the trumpet, I can’t help but mention how effectively many of the local 40 Days for Life campaigns are “tooting their horns” about this effort. Media outlets across the country are buzzing with news reports about this fall’s campaign.

trading my marathon to walk for a CAUSE: to STOP Child Trafficking

You might know that I have been training for the Scotia Bank Marathon since May of this year. I went into my training knowing that I might not make it to race day due to my knee condition. Although this was a reality, I focused on my goal and gave it my best shot...about 4 weeks ago, I began to have major problems with my right calf/shin, to the point of not being able to walk at times. I took off ten days to rest and recover and found that the recovery was not happening as fast as I had hoped and that I might have to reconsider training for a different marathon. Last week I officially had to decide that for my health I would have to stand down from my race on September 27th. While trying to process this DIFFICULT reality, I came across a walk for a cause: A walk to STOP CHILD TRAFFICKING. September 26-27 weekend, thousands of people across Canada and The United States will be walking throughout cities to raise awareness and stop child trafficking; although I can't run my marathon on September 27th, I can walk to stop child trafficking! Since I only found out about this walk last week, I am only registered to raise $200 (I am just happy that I was still able to register to walk!). If you would like to donate to help stop child trafficking and the sexual expolitation of children in Canada, you are still able to donate by clicking here There are other ways to contribute to the end of child trafficking--it starts by becoming aware, becoming educated on the issue and then becoming a voice. I have enclosed some awesome links below that just begin to touch on human trafficking in Canada. These links also provide information on what is being done in our government to put an end to the trafficking of people.
